L. A. Portrait Series

While I was working on a landscape series in Paris, Kentucky, I photographed a person surrounded by a field of grass that extended so far beyond the horizon that I had the impression I was looking into a massive green wall.

When I returned to Venice, California, I wanted torecreate this magnificent yet minimal setting for a portraiture series. Panels of grass and roses became the vehicle for imitating nature in my studio as a backdrop for the L.A. Portrait Series. In the spring and fall of 1985 I photographed people from around my community: artists, architects, directors, actors, bodybuilders, and the mailman.
